Frequently Asked Questions
We are certifying that the cabinet is working as the manufacturer specified. The certifier performs the primary test required for certification.
Recommendations and requirements to certify biological safety cabinets come from a variety of sources. All manufacturers and NSF International recommend field certification of biological safety cabinets on an annual basis. Individual state boards of pharmacy require certification of biological safety cabinets used in pharmacies. Most universities require the user’s of biological safety cabinets with a biological safety level 2 and above to be certified at least once a year.
A certification with minor adjustments should take approximately 30 minutes to 45 minutes. Major adjustments could take up to an hour. The length of time depends on the condition of BSC, number of, or severity of adjustments, the size and type of BSC, and if repairs need to be made to certify the BSC.
A surface decontamination should be done with at least 70% isopropyl. Therefore, all contents should be removed from the BSC, and users should plan for the BSC to be unavailable for at least 1 hour during certification.
The cost is the same for all types and classes of BSC. The cost would only increase if the user requests additional tests outside of the primary tests required for certification. Example Light, sound, Vibration, electrical and Particle counts.
