Chemical Fume Hood

Chemical Fume Hood

Laboratory fume hoods are the first defense to minimize chemical exposure to research workers. They are considered the primary means of protection from inhalation of hazardous vapors. It is, therefore, important that all potentially harmful chemical work be conducted inside a properly functioning fume hood. To ensure safety, all fume hoods should be inspected annually.

Fume Hoods are exhaust ducted cabinets with no HEPA filters attached. Fume hoods have many different uses. The design of a fume hood is to keep harmful and potentially dangerous substances from the user by maintaining a safe and controlled environment.

Face velocities should be measured in accordance with ANSI/AIHA and or SEFA, along with a visual smoke test. Other testing applications like ASHRAE 110 can give a comprehensive outlook of the efficiency of the fume hood. This information should be part of all laboratory safety programs.
